Announcement: Sweet Corn Contest Winners!


Congratulations to the winner and runner-up of our Iowa Sweet Corn Contest!

Kimberly Smith, our first-place winner, will bring home $500 and a box of Iowa sweet corn for her short story “Lucette.”  Kimberly Jean Smith is a writer and teacher. Her fiction has appeared in the Rio Grande Review, Ping-Pong (the literary journal of the Henry Miller Library), and The Collective, among other publications. She teaches at Gavilan College in Gilroy, CA and lives in Santa Cruz. In 2012, she completed an MFA program at Warren Wilson College.

Our runner-up, Catherine Torres, won $50 for her short story “The Mariposa Gang.” Ms. Torres is a diplomat and writer, and her work has appeared in magazines and journals in the Philippines, the United States, and Singapore.  In 2012, her story “Blown Glass” won Escape Into Life’s inaugural fiction contest judged by Robert Olen Butler, and was nominated for the Best of the Net.

“Lucette” and “The Mariposa Gang” will be published on the Flyway website in the fall.
