Flyway is pleased to announce its annual Sweet Corn Short Fiction Contest!

This year our guest judge is Dean Bakopoulos, author of Please Don’t Come Back from the Moon and My American Unhappiness.

The Sweet Corn Short fiction contests celebrates fiction about the environment. We interpret “the environment” broadly here and encourage work that surprises us with your interpretation of the word. We’re looking for fiction that focuses on place, environmental issues, the urban environment, or perhaps characters or circumstances that exist solidly in other disciplines–anthropology, biology, physics or philosophy, for instance. We’re really just looking for a brilliant story. Challenge our conceptions of the environment and environmentally driven work. Above all, surprise us!

This contest is open to all styles and genres of fiction, as long as it shocks, moves or affects the reader.

5,000 word maximum per entry. Writers may submit more than one work, but each submission should be accompanied with a submission fee.

Deadline: Submit online by midnight on April 5th.

Reading fee: $12 (submission only) or $15 (submission + back issue)

Prizes: Winner: $500 +organic Iowa Sweet Corn from local farmer Gary Guthrie (shipped during sweet corn season to the contiguous 48 US states)+ publication in Flyway; Runner Up: $50 + publication in Flyway

Winners will be announced by May 15, 2014!
